安东尼·伯克莱（1893－1971） 推理小说史上的先知。1922年，他开始创作高水准的古典推理小说，并一手创建了著名的“侦探俱乐部”。在古典推理大行其道之时，伯克莱反而预测：“纯粹以解谜为主，重视情节却忽略人物塑造、缺乏文风和幽默感的传统推理小说时日不多。未来的推理小说，心理成分在吸引读者方面将超过数学成分。”而今，这一预言自是全部命中。1939年，伯克莱宣布停止推理小说的创作，但依然活跃于评论界，直至1971年去世。
